Akinlabi Awarded Ivorian National Medal

Akinbiyi Akinlabi, Rutgers Professor of Linguistics, was one of the ten people from all over the world (including four Ivorians and six non-Ivorians), honored with an Ivorian National Medal, at the University of Cocody, Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on August 19, 2011.

Akin was awarded the title and medal of Officier de l’ordre national de la Rèpublique de Côte d’Ivoire. It is the second-highest national honor of the Ivory Coast. He was cited for his effort towards promoting African Linguistics.

The award was presented at the end of the 27th West African Languages Congress, at which Akin gave a plenary talk titled “High Vowel Alternations in Yoruba and (Olo) Igbo.”
